Responsive Open Learning Environments

The ROLE (Responsive Open Learning Environments) project aims at building a framework that allows a learner to easily construct (mash up) and maintain her own Personal Learning Environment (PLE).

This PLE consist of a mix of preferred learning tools, learning services, and learning resources. The learner is supported in constructing her PLE by recommending tools and services based on learning goals, knowledge, community context etc. This approach permits individualization of the components, tools, and functionalities of a learning environment, and their adjustment or replacement of existing web-based software tools.

The development work is based on the research and development of a psycho-pedagogically sound framework for supporting the individual construction of a PLE. In order to measure the effectiveness an evaluation methodology is development and applied in different test-beds. Among other things, IMC puts the main emphasis on the development of the ROLE framework as well as personalized Widgets and their incorporation into and connection with CLIX.

Gain a first impression of the ROLE Software by reading textual descriptions, watching screencasts, and trying the software yourself on the ROLE Showcase Platform. Most software is web based and can be accessed directly from the website; some of the software can be installed in your own learning environment. Furthermore, on the Showcase Platform you can find two User Reports of E-Learning Lab of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and RWTH Aachen University evaluating implementation of the ROLE software in real educational settings. You may get informed about the other project results such as Project Deliverables on the ROLE Project website.
